Adult ADHD assessment & treatment.
Reviewed by the SetMind Team · Last reviewed June 2026

How it shows up in adults
What we listen for.
- 01
Trouble starting and finishing
Tasks pile up. You know what to do but can't make the first move; once started, you can't stop.
- 02
Time runs away from you
Chronically late, underestimating how long things take, missing deadlines despite caring deeply about the outcome.
- 03
Restless mind, restless body
Internal sense of being driven by a motor; fidgeting, leg-bouncing, switching tabs every few seconds.
- 04
Emotional dysregulation
Frustration, rejection sensitivity, intense reactions that fade quickly. Often the most disabling feature in adults.
- 05
Working memory slips
Walking into rooms and forgetting why; losing keys, wallet, phone; needing to re-read the same paragraph.
- 06
It's been like this for a long time
Patterns are traceable back to childhood and school years, even if you only sought help recently.
The SetMind pathway
A structured pathway, end to end.
- Step 01
Pre-assessment screening
Your GP refers you. We send validated self-report questionnaires (ASRS, DIVA-style screener) and a structured developmental history form before your appointment.
- Step 02
Specialist diagnostic interview
A 60–90 minute video consultation with your psychiatrist covering symptoms, functional impact, developmental history, comorbidities and differentials.
- Step 03
Formulation & plan
Written diagnostic formulation sent to you and your GP. Where ADHD is confirmed, a tailored plan covering evidence-based treatment options, psychoeducation and practical strategies.
- Step 04
Follow-up & ongoing care
Review appointments, side-effect monitoring where relevant, and shared care with your GP so prescribing can stay close to home once treatment is stable.
What's included
Everything in the plan.

- Validated screening instruments (ASRS, DIVA-5-style)
- Written report to you and your referring GP
- Discussion of evidence-based treatment options where clinically appropriate
- Psychoeducation and practical adult-ADHD strategies
- Shared-care plan so your GP can continue prescribing long-term

ADHD — common questions.
- Under Australian regulations only psychiatrists and paediatricians can formally diagnose ADHD and initiate prescribed treatment. GPs and psychologists can screen and refer, and GPs can continue prescribing once a specialist has stabilised the treatment plan under a shared-care arrangement.
